WatchOS 5 is Apple’s latest version of the operating system for their smartwatch offering. It includes several improvements over the previous version. Automatic workout tracking, activity challenges and other new features are coming to your Apple watch with this new update.
WatchOS 5 was released recently along with Apple Watch 4. If you own an Apple Watch Series 1 or above, you will get the new OS soon. But if you own the Series 0 or the first Apple watch, you will not get the update. It is the first time Apple is locking out a device from an upgrade.
To download the new WatchOS 5, you need to have iOS 12 on your iPhone. If you are still running on version 11 or anything else, first update your phone’s OS and then you can proceed to the next step.
Ensure your watch has at least 50% battery before you start the update. You can also keep the watch connected to the charger while updating. The same goes for your phone. Make sure it has enough battery before you start.
Connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network and pair it with the Apple Watch. Open the watch app on your phone, click on My Watch, choose General and then click on Software Update.
Once the rollout is ready for your location, you will find WatchOS 5 on the list. Tap on that, agree to the terms and conditions and enter your Apple watch or iPhone password if asked. Once the update starts, you can see its progress on the watch.
Depending on the speed of your internet connection, it could take a few minutes or up to an hour to download and update the watch. Once completed, it will restart. You are now ready-to-use features like Walkie-Talkie, activity challenger and others on your Apple Watch.
